How to get your website listed higher in Google search engine results.

In a nutshell it is really just a 5 step process to get your website higher in Google search results.

1: Keywords. Find out the keyword phrases your prospective customers are using to search Google and the other search engines for products and services like yours. Use the Google keyword tool to find what people are typing onto Googles search engine, and the number of searches a month that are made using those search keywords.

2: Competition. Use the exact keywords and search phrases your prospective customers are using. Type them into Google search, and look at the first page of search results - these are your competitors. What are they doing right? Are their landing pages providing specific, useful, relevant content? Are the providing text, video, or audio? How is each competing website structured? What keeps the visitor on their page? What are they offering? Use Yahoo Site Explorer to find out how many incoming links they have and then look at the quality of those links. How often do they change their pages, add new content, and get new incoming links?

3: Decide what you can do better and start doing it, and do it more often. Do you have a separate web page (known as a "landing page") for each search term you are targeting? Improve your landing pages by making them more specific, relevant, and engaging for your visitors. Make sure the HTML structure of each page follows Googles guidelines so that their automated software (googlebot is the name of Googles web spider) can read your webpages and categorize them correctly. Publish and distribute your content web-wide, using newsworthy press releases, article marketing, podcasts (audio) and video as bait to lure visitors to your website. Get incoming links from high page rank authority sites, by providing them with good reasons (usually high quality content) to link to you. Offer value to your visitors, and engage them with interactive landing pages that provide them the opportunity to give you feedback about your content, and share what they like using social bookmarking.

4: Measure your progress, and keep doing what works. Use Google analytics to find out where your visitors come from (how they found your website), how long they stay on each web page, where in the world they are browsing from, and when there are peaks and troughs inĀ  your website traffic. Ask your visitors on every page if their question was answered, their problem solved, if they found what they were looking for. Capture that information and use it to improve.

5: Repeat this process, forever. Once you get your website onto page one of Google, your competitors will be watching what you are doing, learning from you, copying you, and working to knock you off your perch. Being in the lead is less work than catching up, but if you stop, you sink.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Google usually want the same thing that the customer wants, so getting to page one will often mean more business, but not always. Make sure that your website or online advertising are designed to lead the prospect to making a purchase and becoming a customer. Don't make being on page one your objective, make it the means to your objective of getting your message to more people, selling more of your product or service, or getting more donations for your charity.

WARNING! If your competitors are using "black hat" techniques to get found on page one of Google - do NOT use the same tactics. Google is constantly updating and improving their search ranking algorithms, and they always catch up with any methods that are not strictly above board. Those websites will inevitably disappear from the search results, and if you have walked the high road, using only "white hat" search engine optimization, then your website will shoot up the rankings to where it deserves to be.
